Martin Luther King Day and World Religion Day, by Miss Horvath

Last week, Year 4 spent some time looking at Martin Luther King as it was then that America celebrated Martin Luther King day. Martin Luther King day is held to celebrate his birthday and to remind us of all of his great accomplishments.
We also spent some time writing acrostic poems for World Religion Day which took place on Sunday 20th January. World Religion Day was recognised in 1950 in the United States and is now celebrated worldwide on the third Sunday in January each year. We discussed the importance of tolerance and respect for all religions and how we can show tolerance and respect to someone with a different religion to us.

We were fortunate enough to receive a visit from Lady Baines, who experienced life during WW2.
Lady Baines provided us with some important messages:
- to not be a bystander
- to know that life goes on after difficult times

Myths and Legends Drama lesson, by Miss Jones

Our new English topic 'Myths and Legends' got off to a great start in our Drama lesson. We looked at how we would represent different characters and made tableaux of different scenes from Theseus and the Minotaur.

This half term Year 4 will be diving into the world of Victorian Art, specifically focusing on renowned artist, William Morris.
To kick start the topic, the children observed the art of potato printing! The children noticed that in order to get a clear print you need to take care and ensure that you focus on the details for the best results.
Once the potatoes were put away, we decided to have a go at sketching natural objects to improve our ability to add depth and texture to our drawings.

Year 5 have been working really hard on area and perimeter in Maths over the last few weeks. Today, we decided to apply our skills to real life and measure the area and perimeter of different sections of the playground.

In DT, we have been working hard this half term learning all about biscuits. Today, after researching, designing and learning about the history of biscuits we finally got to create some of our own! We made sure that we accurately weighed out all of the ingredients and we followed the recipe and our design step by step. We also discussed why it was important to wash our hands and why food hygiene is so important.

This week in R.E, Year 6 discussed the concept of judgement, heaven and hell. They had to work as a team to discuss several scenarios and order them from heaven to hell.

Last Friday was Children in need, we participated in lots of activities to help raise money for charity. In DT, our current topic is Biscuits. Last week we were investigating and researching different types of biscuits and their properties, this will help us when it comes to designing and making our own. We linked our biscuit tasting and designing lesson to our current Geography topic 'Our Country', not only did we get to taste and design biscuits but we also decorated them by creating the UK's flag on the biscuit! We had a very fun afternoon.

What a fantastic afternoon!
We learnt all about the history of Warbutons, bread production, health and safety and food hygiene. Children tried many new foods for the first time ever, such as hummus, peppers, dairy-free cheese and spinach. Have a look at our wonderful pictures!
Warburtons Visit, by Miss Currie

Year 3 have had an amazing morning with a special visitor from Warburtons. They learnt all about food safety, hygiene and nutrition. It linked in perfectly with our Science topic (animals and humans), PSHE (healthy eating) and DT (making sandwiches).
The children all agreed that eating their own sandwiches was their favourite part of the session.

Year 4 have recieved some fantastic feedback about how well we keep our reading records up to date and how much we all read at home!
Remember - an adult can write in anything you read at home! Don't forget to try to read as much as possible, it's a great way to wind down before bed time.

DT - The history of Biscuits, by Miss Jones

Our topic this half term in DT is Biscuits. Last lesson, we researched the history of biscuits. To start our lesson we all wrote down everything we knew so far about biscuits, we then rotated around all of the tables in the classroom, reading other groups facts and adding our own in a different colour. We then used QR codes to research the history of biscuits, we made a timeline to display our findings. We also found out lots of fun facts during our research!
Materials Investigation, by Miss Jones

Today, we investigated different materials and their properties. Each group investigated a different property and then reported their findings back to the class. Some of the properties we looked at were:
- Elasticity
- Whether it was waterproof
- How tough, stretchy or hard the material was.
We thought carefully about our independent and dependent variable and how we were going to ensure that it was a fair test. We also made a prediction and then displayed our results in a graph.

Today Year 3 enjoyed walking to Stretford Library where they listened to a story and a poem. The children (and staff) also got the chance to choose their own book to read.
