RE

Our Vision

At Moss Park, we believe that Religious Education (RE) plays a vital role in developing our pupils’ Social, Moral, Spiritual, and Cultural (SMSC) understanding. RE at Moss Park Primary encourages children to explore and ask big questions about life, to find out and celebrate what people believe and what difference this makes to how people live. We want our children to be able to make sense of religion and world views, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living. We strive for our children to be well informed about the different religions in the world and in our closer community. RE contributes to the fulfilment of our school aims, with particular reference to, “Equip pupils with the skills and values they need to form positive relationships based on equality and mutual respect”.

Through RE, we learn about and from each other, fostering a sense of mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs. This reflects the British Value of "Mutual Respect and Tolerance," which is central to our diverse and inclusive school community. Whilst parents have the right to make a written request to withdraw from the teaching of R.E, this has never happened at Moss Park because of the mutual trust and support from our parents in our aims, our values and our curriculum.

Our Aims

  • Develop a secure understanding of a range of religions, beliefs, and worldviews.

  • Build respect, tolerance, and empathy for people with differing faiths and beliefs.

  • Reflect on their own beliefs, values, and experiences, fostering personal growth and spiritual development.

  • Gain the skills to critically evaluate religious and philosophical questions and engage in meaningful discussions.

  • Connect their learning in RE to their broader understanding of British Values and global citizenship.

Implementation

By returning to the locally agreed Diocesan Syllabus in September 2024, we have ensured that the curriculum is rich, sequenced, and reflective of our school’s values. Leaders have worked with RE Today and SACRE to create a curriculum that promotes high-quality learning and engages pupils in meaningful exploration of faiths, beliefs, and non-religious worldviews. We have used our knowledge of our community and the faiths within it to make our curriculum relevant to the lived experience of the children at Moss Park.

Our curriculum is delivered by well-trained staff, supported through professional development opportunities such as the October 2024 INSET day, and is designed to reflect our local, diverse, and mutually supportive community. RE is also integrated into our wider curriculum through PSHE, assemblies, and co-curricular events, ensuring that it contributes significantly to pupils’ personal development and understanding of British Values.

The impact of this approach is evident in the respectful attitudes and open-mindedness displayed by our pupils. They leave Moss Park with:

  • A well-rounded understanding of different religions, beliefs, and worldviews

  • The ability to engage in meaningful discussions, reflect on their own values, and appreciate the perspectives of other

  • Respect for diversity and a commitment to inclusion: "All Different, All Equal"

In the July 2024 Parent Questionnaires, parents overwhelmingly agreed that, "the school supports my child's wider personal development," highlighting the positive influence of our RE curriculum on pupils’ social, moral, spiritual, and cultural growth.
