English
Our Vision
The study of English at Moss Park Primary School develops children’s ability to listen, speak, read, and write for a wide range of purposes, including the communication of their ideas, views, and feelings. Children are enabled to express themselves creatively and imaginatively as they become enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poetry, drama, non-fiction, and media texts. By examining patterns, structures, and origins, children gain a profound understanding of how language works, using their knowledge, skills, and understanding in speaking and writing across diverse situations.
Our Aims
To provide a language-rich environment that promotes a culture of reading and writing
To develop in pupils a love of books and high-quality literature that supports their learning across the curriculum and extends beyond the classroom to enrich their lives
To explicitly teach reading skills throughout the school, continually enhancing children’s understanding and enjoyment of texts
To teach children the craft of writing, developing their confidence and skills to write effectively for a range of purposes and audiences
To teach the basics—spelling, grammar, handwriting, and punctuation—ensuring children have all the necessary tools for effective communication
To foster in pupils the confidence, desire, and ability to express their views and opinions both orally and in writing
To value and celebrate diversity in culture and language
By achieving these aims, we ensure our pupils are well-equipped to communicate their ideas and emotions effectively, enriching their personal and academic lives and preparing them for future success.
Implementation
At Moss Park Primary, our English curriculum is carefully structured to ensure progression, engagement, and the development of essential skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Pupils engage daily with high-quality texts through independent reading, teacher-led storytime, and class discussions, fostering fluency, comprehension, and a love of literature. We teach reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and handwriting systematically, building strong foundations for effective communication.
Lessons incorporate a wide range of genres, including stories, poetry, drama, and non-fiction, to inspire creativity and critical thinking. English skills are embedded across the curriculum, providing meaningful opportunities for pupils to apply and refine their learning in context. Our curriculum reflects diverse cultures and perspectives, promoting an appreciation for the richness of language and literature. With a focus on structured progression, we ensure pupils build on prior knowledge to meet expectations and prepare for future learning, equipping them to become confident communicators.
